What i recommend is an easy breakin, and do some homework on oils, it will pay off later. The Aprilia does not come with breakin oil, so i would recommend what Aprilia says about breakin, what i also did was run Delo 20-50wt oil, i changed oil before i even put one mile on the bike. The bike companies are aware of this problem, my two 07 KTM SXF`s came with breakin oil. Also GM offers EOS oil fortifier, to be used with API oils.Ĭontrary to popular belief, because of these new oils it can take five times longer to properly breakin a motor, and care should be taken during breakin, ring seal, cams, cam lobes, and valves are all affected, premature wear has been seen in all of these areas. The AERA has tech bulletin #TB233 and Comp Cams has tech bulletin #225, regarding this issue, and recommend diesel rated oil like Delo or Rottella, these are not API oils, or Redline also not an API oil, these oils have the correct concentrations.
And the new and improved API oils do not have the correct concentrations. The aforementioned additives are critical for proper breakin. So the same oil that you bought a year ago is not the same oil that you buy today. I have debated about posting this for months, because of the stir it might cause, but the need for everyone to have the knowledge, and do what they want after knowing, was too great.Īll API formulated oils, for the last year have had a major reduction in ZDDP (zinc-dialkyl-dithiophospate), and zinc, manganese, and or phosphates, the reason is they pollute the atmosphere.
